The other day I received an e-mail from an individual who had an interesting problem and I want to share it with you because you may of faced the exact same thing. His email was this:

We constructed a natural gas fire pit and put lots of colored glass chips in it. It works well, looks wonderful but is useless for roasting marshmallows : (.

It feels like an open flame just lights the marshmallows … We need coals. But I don’t want to put wood in and handle the ashes.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

We here at Lava Rocks for Fire Pits.com never had a question or problem of this nature presented to us, but upon reflexion and talking about it with our staff this was our solution to this problem. We had seen it done before but only by 2 people.

our return email went as follows:

Your email was engaging, we hadn't ever heard about this sort of problem before.

Glass chips make for a pretty fire, one where you would not want to mess it up with food drippings like marshmallows or hotdogs for example. And glass will not hold heat very well; or reflect glowing heat too.

Lava rock appears to get only better with age due to the carbon build up caused from food burn to a “carbon crisp” (and lava rock hides these crumbs as the rock isn't so uniform in size and colour and is permeable). The heat built up in the lava rock with natural gas or propane pumps out better for roasting those party favourites because of the thin walls of the lava rocks ‘ micro caves, occasionally turning them growing red (so creating ember like effects).

It all boils down to a pair things you want to choose for yourself, and only you can answer them. Do you want a pretty fire pit or a useful fun fire pit? Or better yet , why not both?

I have seen both functions built into the same fire pit.

In this one case we have seen, they put a double gas ring in the pit with one rings being larger in diameter than the other. And depending on your taste and style you are trying for, they put colored glass chips in the middle over the littler gas ring and lava rock on the outside over the larger diameter gas ring.

What this did was sort of cool. When these folks wanted just pretty flames they turned on the center gas ring which was under the glass chips; but when they would have liked a fun roasting flame they'd switch on the bigger outside ring, the one under the lava rock.

This could be something to consider.

I'm wishing you all the best and have a good time with this.

Lee

Building a rear yard fire pit is fun and still can be very useful. There is no need to sacrifice one for the other when you may have both. I am hoping this article allows you to see you can make a extraordinarily unique and fun fire pit for you own back garden. Its something new to contemplate.

The beauty of gas fire pits is that they can be used year round. They are totally controllable, which allows for less heat in the summer, and maximum warming in the winter months. Outdoor entertaining is best enjoyed around the glowing light of a fire, and now, having this fire is increasingly simple.

Propane fire pits are particularly straightforward to light, and are totally safe to use. By getting rid of the requirement for wood, the effort of lighting a fire pit absolutely goes away. This also eliminates the requirement for fret about putting the fire out, and cleaning the pit intermittently. Propane fire pits are built to only use minimal propane, which makes them an inexpensive alternative choice to wood. These can safely be used to roast marshmallows, or cook hot dogs, just as you would around a campfire.

There are loads of designs available, and choosing one that is correct for your space will be simple. Stone, metal, slate, and more are all options. Obviously, these are as visually fascinating as they're functional. If there is one downfall, it could be that you have a hard time selecting between all of the tasty models that are at present available. To narrow your choices, consider where you'll be putting it, and what sort of outside furniture will surround it. This will help you visualise the best style to match your outdoor decor.

Gas fire pits can now be acquired on the web. This is the easiest way to go shopping for yours, as the most competitive prices, and largest variety can be discovered on the internet. In addition, shopping is made easier, as there's no need to go from store to store wasting fuel while trying to find the choice that is correct for you. Once you find the one you like, simply place your order and have it shipped right to your home. Despite their size, shipping costs are actually reasonable.

Gas fire pits are showing up in yards and on patios across the land. This is for a very good reason, as entertaining is much more pleasurable when the glow of a fire is present. As well as entertaining use, sitting around a fire and relaxing after a hard day at work is one of the best ways to melt the stress away. You simply cannot go wrong in purchasing one of your own, and will speedily find that this was cash well spent.

Every yard activity will be boosted with the addition of a gas fire pit. These outside appliances provide heat, light and a fun atmosphere to any backyard. The newest additions to the fire pit craze are gas fire pits that use propane as a fuel source. Propane offers a safer and more effective flame and is easier controlled. Most gas applications provide a remote control starter that may also be used to control the flame height in the fire pit.

The pits that operate on gas are bigger than the wood burning fire pits. The addition of gas as a fuel source permits better control of the fire and the appliances are far more open in appearance. Many gas applications are made with a stone outer enclosure. The large fire bowls are open and contain a gas orifice that provides the flames. These large fire bowls are filled with rock or synthetic logs that give the appearance of burning logs when the fire is burning. As with many gas and propane appliances there's not much maintenance required other than insuring the propane tank is filled.

Where a wood fire pit is a lightweight style device that can be relocated, the gas fire pit is a permanent appliance that, once prepared often can't be easily moved to some other spot. It's critical to arrange the back garden activities around the gas fire pit by proper placement of outside furniture. Gas fire pits may also be connected to a natural gas source.

Connections to a source of natural gas typically mean an enduring placement of the fire pit. Gas fire pit applications are usually sold with a propane connection and a coupler that allows conversion to natural gas. The propane cylinders that are required are the same as the ones used on a propane gas grill.

Since gas appliances are rather more important and permanent in nature the cost of gas or propane fire pits are significantly higher than the wood burning units. Plenty of the gas fire pits are going to be available at costs close to $1,000.00 where the wood burning units cost several hundred bucks. A gas burning application will last many years and provide a central meeting place in the yard that's worm and amicable. The simplicity of use and low upkeep of a gas or propane fire pit more than compensates for the additional cost. With no need to stoke the fire and clean the ashes any of the gas fire pits is a decision that will make the customer cheerful.

Passing time outside, next to a warm fire, on a chilly night is an activity many of us find pleasurable, particularly those people who use safe and less work intensive gas fire pits. Rather than having to slash, haul, and stack firewood they can create a pleasing, warm environment with very little effort. Since natural gas and propane fire pits don't rely on untrustworthy wood for fuel, they instantly light and start producing heat immediately. They're also clean burning, need little maintenance, and are much safer than a wood burning fire. Gas fire pits are a great way to heighten up a favorite outside area, and make a warm, friendly atmosphere for gathering with pals and family.

Slicing firewood is no picnic. It is tough work, and is just one of the labor intensive tasks you would have to do to get ready for a wood burning flame. There is not any have to have to go through all that when you can use one of many trendy gas fire pits that are presently available. You can have all the ambiance and sweetness of an out of doors fire with the convenience that comes with a gas powered flame.

Lighting a wood fire is sometimes intensely frustrating. If the wood you are using has not had enough time to season correctly, or is a little damp you may encounter difficulty when making an attempt to get even the tiniest spark going. A superb thing about a flame powered by gas is that it's always available whenever you would like it. Unlike a wood fire, your gas fire pit will start making heat the moment that you light it. Which means you and your visitors can start warming up right away.

The lack of wood in your fire pit suggests you will not need to spend a little time cleaning it out. There’ll be no ashes to dump or chunks of half burnt wood to haul off. Safety is another extra benefit to natural gas and propone gas fire pits. Not only will you not have to stress about sparks floating off and accidentally setting something aflame, you won’t have to spend some time ensuring the fire is put out.

Gas fire pits are a wonderful way to provide yourself with all of the beauty and warmth of a wood fire, without the work, and risk that comes with a wood powered flame. They are safe, straightforward to keep clean, and light swiftly. Enjoy your evenings outside more by adding your very own gas fire pit to your fave outside location.

Fire pits make the perfect addition to any yard’s landscaping. From making s’mores to making an enchanting and intimate space for outdoor entertaining, they are as functional as they’re stunning. While older models required house owners to keep wood on hand, more modern gas powered options make lighting an odor free fire simple, as well as allowing more control over the peak of the flame. For people that are interested in installing a fire pit in their lawn, the following tips can help you select the right one.

The aesthetics of your grass, and the quantity of space useable to you, should be the first considerations in choosing a model that’s most suited to your space. Graceful metal or slate models are good selections for homes with a modern aesthetic. Their clean lines and muted colors help them to fit perfectly with refined out of doors furniture and spare, concrete hardscaping features. Those who live in a more agricultural area, or whose lawn has a more natural feel, may want to consider fire pit frames that look as though they were made with uneven rocks or logs. This country look will provide the feel of a cosy cabin right outside one’s door.

People who enjoy DIY projects will be well placed to install their own model with fire pit kits. These kits provide homeowners with the materials to form a pit that may look like it was custom built by a professional. For people that are considering this route, they should remember that some tools will be needed to hook up a dedicated gas line, as well as to run power outlets and create the hearth itself. Read thru the how-to directions before placing an order to guarantee you have the tools important to complete the job.

Budget purchasers who love the outward appearance of fire pits can give up gas options and get more custom, wood-burning pits. These are typically priced at a fraction of the cost, and require much less in terms of set up. As with the gas options outlined above, these come in numerous varied styles engineered to match the appearance of any yard. In addition, they could be simply moved from place to place as required, permitting owners to move their entertaining space with ease.

Fire pits are a great way to add a homey ambiance to any yard. They supply an outdoor gathering space for entertaining that may be used year round, and can even give you the feeling of camping just feet from your home. With options like gas and remote activated models, homeowners can enjoy a warm fire with little work.

This writer has invested intofire pits and endorses outdoor gas fire pits and fire pit kits.

Gardening stimulates every one of the senses, providing great achievement as well as enjoyment.

Hydroponics is the actual growing of plants without using soil. A range of hydroponic gardening techniques exist and just about any plant could be grown using hydroponics.

Hydroponic gardening is considered to be really easy and many teachers use this particular procedure of gardening with their pupils when working on science projects.

There are a number of benefits affiliated with hydroponic gardening. When plants are grown using hydroponics, the roots do not need to search for needed nutrients. The nutrient solution is provided right to them, which translates into plant growth, which is more abundant. Adding hydroponics into an backyard garden can help add interest along with intrigue.

The natural types of conditions obtainable outdoors in the summer time make it a perfect time to test with the different types of hydroponic cultivation. Annual flowers, fruit, herbs, as well as vegetables do extremely well with hydroponics.

Along with hydroponics, essential growing elements such as light, temperature, and humidity can be controlled.

Due to the fact there’s no soil, there is less maintenance required with hydroponics. There is no need for weeding and the worry of pests as well as soil borne diseases is tremendously reduced. Hydroponics is usually a soil less culture, however, not all soil less cultures are regarded to be hydroponics. Numerous of these cultures do not use the nutrient solutions, which are needed for hydroponics.

There are 2 main varieties of hydroponics, which are solution culture and medium culture. Solution culture makes use of a nutrient solution but does not use a solid growing medium for the roots.
The medium culture has a solid growing medium for the roots such as gravel, sand or a perlite culture.

Hydroponic plants are usually grown in a variety of ways, each providing nutrient solution to the plants one way or another. Hydroponics can be widely used to grow plants at any place, even in your own back garden.
Choosing hydroponics can grow anything from garden crops to flowers.

Hydroponic horticulture is considered to be a clean and exceptionally efficient technique for raising plants. Certainly, there is a smaller amount of mess and also less maintenance.

Hydroponic horticulture helps to eliminate the requirement for weeding and aids to cut down on problems and unwanted pests. This mode of gardening can also be readily adapted to indoor environments, which means it can certainly be applied throughout the year to grow a gardener’s treasured plants.

The biggest advantage to hydroponics is the overall outcome of the plants, which will be of improved quality and usually are much healthier. Gardeners can give mother nature a helping hand while taking pleasure in the therapeutic health benefits of their garden. Gardeners have the opportunity to see the dramatic improvements that growing hydroponically can bring to their garden.

Hydroponics has generally been an ecologically sound gardening choice.
It utilizes significantly less water than traditional gardening and does not erode the soil or add toxic compounds to the natural environment.
Soluble nutrient formulas are re-circulated and used by the plants’ roots, which will help eliminate environmental waste material.

Plants are typically much healthier in a hydroponic system than those grown in soil, which makes them a lot more pest resistant.
Biological control agents utilized as preventative measures.
Hazardous herbicides are simply not required because there are no weeds in a hydroponic garden.

Seeing that numerous gardeners today are choosing to grow organically, organic crop cultivation in hydroponics has grown to be very popular.
Organic and natural gardening is the cultivation of plants without the use of synthetic chemicals or pesticides.

Gardeners are prepared to invest in the extras required by organic gardening because it ensures that no harmful pesticides or fungicides will be applied. There tend to be many organic nutrients and additives made designed for use in hydroponic gardens.

In this article you will find out how to prune plum trees. One of several articles on how to prune fruit trees. Pruning plum trees is straightforward, once the trees are established, and consists mainly of thinning out overcrowded wood. Some rather more detailed pruning is, however, necessary in the early years, in order to build up a suitable framework.

How to prune plum trees – Maiden tree:

If a maiden tree is planted, that is, a tree within one year of budding or grafting, pruning may be carried out in the Spring, after deciding on tree form. Generally plums will be grown as half-standards having a main stem about 4 ft. in length, before the branch system. An open centre is aimed at, the main branch system forming the outside, with young wood filling in the interior. This method of forming the half standard tree can also be used for Apples and Pears.

Assuming a maiden tree has been purchased, this would be planted in the Autumn and, later on, when the tree has settled down, and you are wondering how to prune plum trees, it should be pruned to a bud, 9 to 12 inches above the height of the lowest branch desired.

In the following season shoots will grow from buds below the top, and the most suitable are left, ensuring that they are well spaced and at a wide angle to the stem. Other shoots are removed, leaving about 5 or so which will form the main branch system.

The top bud will grow strongly; this can be offset by making a nick below it with a knife, forcing more growth into the lower buds. Wide angled branches can be encouraged by making small notches in the bark above selected buds; the topmost shoot can be removed later. Any growth arising below the position of the lowest branch should merely be shortened for the first year or two before removing, as they assist in thickening the stem.

The selected branches are subsequently pruned to a suitable outward pointing bud, during the first year or two, one third to one half of the new wood being removed; afterwards this is reduced to mere tipping which is discontinued altogether eventually. The tree will consist of 6 to 7 well-spaced main branches, growing from them and lateral growths which will form the bulk of the fruiting wood.

How to prune plum trees – 2 or 3-year-old

If the tree has been purchased as a 2 or 3-year-old, it is advisable to defer pruning for one year after planting. The branch system of such a tree will already have been formed. After the framework of the tree has been formed, subsequent pruning will consist of cutting out dead and diseased wood, badly placed wood crossing, or too upright growth, and ensuring that the growth remaining is well spaced.

How to prune plum trees – Drooping varieties:

Certain varieties have a drooping habit. Although during the early years this factor need not influence pruning unduly, as the tree becomes established the drooping tendency will be more pronounced. It will be necessary to prune branch leaders to an upward-pointing bud, and not to an outward one, as in upright growing varieties. Similarly, lower branches will hang down, and may have to be shortened eventually to a more suitable subsidiary branch.

How to prune plum trees – Silver Leaf Disease:

This serious disease of Plums enters the tissues through open wounds and cuts. It is able to do so during the winter and most readily infects wood through large cuts which expose the heart. During the formation period of the tree, pruning can be carried out in the early Spring, as cuts are relatively small.

On established trees, however, it is better to defer pruning until late Spring or Summer, and to perform this operation during dry weather, especially where large wounds are made. The natural gums exuded at this time assist healing. Broken branches should be sawn off neatly, and all large wounds protected with white lead paint. Always use a sharp, curved blade knife, or a good pair of secateurs, for pruning. Avoid “jagged” cuts, which can lead to damage, and do not cut too closely to the topmost bud.

It is early enough that we can plan some things we are going to do,
or would like to do and possibly some that we should not do

Having a considerably longer growing season than many places, allow you to
start earlier in the spring and carry on later in the fall.
This is to your advantage. Actually anyone can have a nice garden if they try, even those who claim pitifully to say “I do not have a green thumb.”

Here are some tips you should be doing before spring.

Inspect all your seed-starting trays and make sure they’re okay to be used.

Purchase your seed or use seed you saved last year.

Prepare containers and soil.

Most seeds germinate better with bottom heat.

Think about getting a heating pad or heating cable, which get placed under seed trays.

Start lettuce in a cool greenhouse,in pots or direct seed in a cold frame.

The soil might be cold, but you can sow arugula, mache, snow peas & Asian greens in raised beds, as long as the soil is not waterlogged.

Garlic, which was planted last fall emerges soon. Feed it with fish or kelp fertilizer in liquid form now until June.

Peppers are slow starters. They need heat and lots of light. After developing two sets of true leaves, fertilize them about once a week with diluted fish fertilizer.

I hope this will help you to get your garden going.
