There are many things to do with the corn you just grew. Corn comes in a myriad of varieties. Most widely known and basic as well are the three popular kinds of corn, the most valuable one being’ dent corn’ or ‘field corn’ which is primarily used as cattle feed, ’sweet corn’ that is often sold on road side stands and of course the most loved and relished by one and all ‘popcorn’ or ‘Indian corn’ which is characterized by a hard shell on the kernel.

Eating corn on the cob is the most and common way to dine on the crop after it is harvested. The best way eat corn is just to eat it on the cob. Simply unwrap it, boil it, and eat it. Put lots of butter on it. You can roast it on the grill to make it really savory. This is a popular way to eat corn and one the experts recommend. You should eat corn after it is picked because it loses its flavor quickly. I really like corn when it is roasted and then salted and buttered. This is the best way to eat the crop.

You can use your harvested corn to make corn flour- the same kind used in tortillas and taco shells, and corn chips. In order to get the corn to be like flour, it must be ground up. You must mash it and dry it very well into a fine mush then you can use it to bake with. Sometimes this corn flour serves as a thickening agent in an array of delectable food dishes because of the starch in the plant. Corn is also put to use for making delicious sauces, cakes, puddings, sweets and desserts and a lot of the food that gets processed. Corn is king and it is in everything.

Corn is a staple crop and one of the most grown plants in the world. The main ingredient in corn which is starch, when dried can be used to convert into dextrin or can even be put to use in its present state. The corn is made into high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup which is a cheap substitute for sugar. You can even make this in your own home, though it does not taste that great by itself. Corn by products are used in everything, though sometimes to our detriment.

Corn is also an outstanding feed for livestock attributing to its benefits of high in energy, easily digestible and low in fiber features. The corn crop can be either cut green or dried for fodder and serves as an essential forage crop also. Corn is feed to both cows and pigs in order to fatten then up. This is cheap way to feed both your animals as well keep in one area where you can look after them and ensure they do not get into too much trouble.

All parts of the corn are put to optimal use. The husk can be braided and weaved to make masks, baskets, sleeping mats or moccasins. Fabrics that are used to make your clothing are strengthened and hardened with corn starch. More so, many of the soft drinks that you so enjoy guzzling down are sweetened with corn syrup. In addition ethanol is made from corn too. There are many things you can do with the corn you have just grown. You can eat it, cook it, use it as an additive, and drive with it. Corn has a myriad of uses.

Protecting Your Corn From Pests

So your corn is planted and seems to be thriving, but there are a few hurdles that need to be still surpassed and one of the pressing issues being what is the best way to protect the corn form insects. Insects can ravage your crop if you are not careful. They are the number one threat to your harvest.

Insects pose a great risk to your corn plant. Make sure you plant your corn far apart so you can control any infestation that might occur. Be vigilant for corn earworms who enjoy the popular type of sweet corn. These insects lay eggs inside the husk and once they are inside there is nothing that can be done to save the crop. Moreover, flying bugs such as locust and moths might also eat your crop too. Crows, though not insects, are also a serious problem so don’t forget to put up a scarecrow so they don’t eat your crop.

To keep earworms from entering the tip of your corn husk, wrap a rubber band around the husk or attach a pin afte the corn silk appears. This will seal the corn shut while not harming your corn and prevent the earworms from coming and damaging your plant.

Next, make sure you spray an insecticide over your crop. The one that is used the most is called BT or Bacilulus Thuringiensis. This attacks and kills the larva of the insects before they mature. Like all chemical sprays, get all the safety information before you use it at your local shop. If you use too much, the corn will be too poisonous and not safe for human consumption. If you use too little, you won’t kill the insect.

Other insect pests such as cutworms, stalk borers and stink bugs can reduce the corn stands as well even if a soil insecticide is used while planting, these insects can kill the seedling corn plants through the 4-6 leaf stage. Special scouting procedures are undertaken to determine when these insects might appear. The seed corn maggot can also destroy the corn plant and in order to protect the germinating seeds and seedlings from this pest, a seed treatment must be applied. Sampling of the soil for wire worms and white grubs must be administered supplemented with random digging of the soil with a shovel.

There are many ways to protect your corn against insects. Careful use of natural and chemical deterrents will keep your crop safe from insects and pest so that it grows to maturity and harvested in its entirety. Be vigilant and watch your crop carefully so you can get pest before they spread to any corn. Careful watching will ensure your crop stays safe.

Authentic Mexican Meals

Filed Under (gardening) by KC Kudra on 08-04-2009

Mexico offers a unique cuisine that is delicious and healthy. Ancestral home to the Mayan, Aztec and Zapotec civilizations, Mexico has a long history in cultivating food. Native staples included avocados, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers, and a variety of squash. For meat, they hunted deer, turkey, quail, and rabbit. Chocolate is a native plant in this area, and was prepared as a beverage for the Aztec royalty.

Once the Spanish arrived, their cuisine was introduced. Bread, cheese, beef, and cream were added to the native foods. They introduced chickens, sheep and pigs, as well as wheat and sugarcane. By the time Spain gave up ruling Mexico, their influence was well blended with the native cuisine.

Corn is a major part of Mexican meals. Cornmeal, known as masa, is made into a dough that can be formed into tortillas, empanadas, or tamales. Corn is also added to soups, stews, and other dishes. Tortillas made of flour are more common in northern Mexico. Chili peppers are also a main part of the Mexican diet. Jalapenos, poblano, and Serrano chilies are just a few of the common choices in the Mexican household.

Beans also provide a good source of protein in Mexican meals. Pinto beans are found in the north, while black beans are popular in the Yucatan peninsula. There are many different varieties used throughout Mexico to make dishes like frijoles (refried beans).

There are many regional favorites found in the typical Mexican meal. Beef is used frequently in the north, as it is hot and dry, with good grazing grounds. The Pacific coast is known for coffee production and its corn stew. The Gulf coast offers a wide variety of seafood and fish dishes, tropical fruits and vegetables. Central Mexico has the most distinctive Spanish influence, and the Yucatan people commonly eat seafood, shellfish, eggs, corn, and black beans. Herbs are used liberally throughout Mexico.

If you want to try making a typical Mexican meal at home, there are many easy recipes to try out. Authentic Mexican rice recipes can set the tone for your entire meal. Rice is frequently used in Mexico as a side dish or as filling. Once you have tried a recipe or two at home, you will see how delicious authentic Mexican food can be.

Do not be afraid to experiment and try new things. A new variety of bean may add a different texture or flavor to your meal. Serve tortillas and salsa with a meal, or try something completely new like ceviche. Even the kids can get busy in the kitchen and make quesadillas or tacos.

For something different, try a Mexican breakfast. Mix some tropical fruit in a bowl for an easy meal. Scramble some eggs and salsa for heurvos rancheros. Alternatively, you can top a tortilla with an egg and add some bacon or ham, chilies, tomatoes and cheese. Serve it with some refried beans for a traditional breakfast.
