Double Glazed Units - How Do I Pick?

Filed Under (gardening) by Neil A Kemp on 07-05-2009

by Neil A Kemp

Before spending a small fortune on replacing our tired and worn single glazed units it’s worth asking ourselves why are we going to do it? Double glazing is a large financial investment why should we bother. If your current windows are in disrepair then you really have no choice at all and the decision has been made for you. However, even if your current windows are still serviceable there are still many great reasons why you may wish to change them for double glazed units anyway. Energy efficiency and saving on heating costs has to be one of the main reasons most people finally decide to change.

Because single glazed windows only have a single sheet of glass when they are broken by accident or on purpose they shatter into many pieces some of which are long and very sharp. These sharp pieces can travel at some speed and cover a large distance. If hit by one of these bits injury of some sort is almost inevitable. Double glazed units on the other hand are very strong and much harder to break. They can also be fitted with safety glasses which makes them even safer.

A thief or burglar will have no difficulty in gaining access into your home if you only have single glazed units and frames. The elderly wooden frames are no real deterrent at all. The thief can easily either take out the entire frame or simply smash the single glazing to gain entry into your house. If you have good quality double glazed windows and frames fitted it’s much tougher for the would be thief to gain entry. The double glazed units are almost impossible to break and the frame is much stronger meaning the thief will have to spend much more time in order to gain entry.

One of the worst things about single glazed units particularly in cold climes is the fact they allow a lot of heat from the house to escape into the outside world. These days with energy costs as high as they are it’s like burning your hard made cash. Also large panes of single glazing are a cold spot in your house and are not very comfortable to sit by. Double glazed units can save you up to 40% of this lost heat. Standard double glazing is very efficient but if you pay just a little bit more you can add energy efficient glass which has a special coating to help reflect heat from a room back into the home.

Before deciding whether you should get double glazing consider these additional advantages over single glazing. The style and choice of look is staggering no matter what your neighbourhood or conservation area requirements are you will be able to find a look that will fit in perfectly and not look out of place. The colour of frame can be chosen from a wide variety and will be sure to blend in. If necessary instead of PVCu which requires little or no maintenance you could opt for the conventional timber frame. The advantage of timber frames is that they look great and generally fit in much better than UPVc. Although Aluminium is still available as a choice not many individuals pick it these days.

Why Every Gardener Needs a Garden Shed - Plans and Design

Filed Under (gardening) by William Boyle on 05-05-2009

by William Boyle

Spring rolls around and its time to dip into the pocket book and start getting ready for the summer. There’s planting to be done, and repairs to do. Perhaps there’s a landscaping project on the horizon.

Once the plans are in place and the items are bought its time to get out the tools. Now this is where the real challenge begins. Where did you put them last fall? Probably find some in the basement and then there’s that corner of the garage that has some of the bigger ones. Oh yes don’t forget about the spare room probably tucked some away in there too.

This has all got to tell you something. As if you really need, a garden shed. It’s going to save you time and money in the long run. It’s going to save you time because all of your outdoor tools and equipment can be stored in one place. That means when you are in need of something you can just go and get it because you know where it is. When your garden and outdoor implements are scattered all over the place, it takes a lot of time just remembering where they are and then the search is on.

Money wise they save you a great deal. One of your agreements against the garden shed investment may be you just don’t want to put out that kind of money after all you’ve managed so far.

The longer you live in a house the more you accumulate. You may have managed up until now but the time is coming sooner or later you just won’t have enough storage space.

Yes, it’s going to cost you money to buy your garden shed. Think of it this way though how much has you spent on soil weeding products and fertilizer. You use a portion of them then one of two things happen. You let them sit outside where they get destroyed by the elements, or secondly you end up throwing them out because there is no place to put them.

Most of the lawn and garden equipment that you have probably purchased has not been cheap either. When it’s not stored properly, it can become damaged or even ruined. The other thing to consider is some of the equipment is not safe to be laying around especially where there are young children.

Finally, a garden shed really does add to the ambience of the landscaping. It makes it look neat and just shows that someone really cares about their outdoors. If you aren’t sure, what style to get just look around your neighborhood and you will get a good idea. You need to base your choice according to your needs. If you don’t own a lot of garden supplies and equipment then one of the smaller ones will work nicely. Don’t forget though that those winter items can be conveniently stored here as well so plan your required space accordingly. Once you have got past the fact that you had to lay some money out for your shed you are going to be most glad that you did.

Patio Cushions: the Different Types of Fabrics

Filed Under (gardening) by Patrick G Cousins on 29-04-2009

by Patrick G Cousins

Patios are great places to entertain guests outdoors or simply have a relaxing time with friends and family. To maximize the enjoyment patio furniture is an important component of any patio. And to make sure that the furniture is comfortable and relaxing you will need patio cushions.

Not only can outdoor cushions ensure that your patio furniture is snug and cozy, they can also transform the look and style of a patio instantly. With hundreds of different styles, patterns and colors you can use a new set of patio cushions to make your outdoor setting look a thousand times better.

Besides the color and look, probably the most important consideration is the material of the cushions. If you will be leaving the cushions out when the patio is not in use then you will need to choose a set made from a weatherproof material.

One of the most important characteristics of any outdoor fabric is its ability to remain durable under the stress of the harsh sun and heavy rain. They should be easy to clean so that food stains and dirt that will accumulate can be removed quickly. Also, insects and spiders should be unable to nest inside the cushion’s filling.

One of the most common fabrics that outdoor cushions are made from is acrylic. It is not only strong and durable, it is also is easy to clean with a damp cloth. Olefin is another popular fabric and is resistant to both the sun and rain. It is well known to keep its color even under the harshest conditions.

Polyester is also used to make outdoor cushions. It is not only cheap but is also durable and waterproof. However, some people do complain about the fact that it can become hot and may stick to people’s bare skin if they sit against them for an extended period of time.

If you want to use a fabric which isn’t weatherproof then you will probably need a secure cupboard to store the patio cushions away. This cupboard will need to be situated in a dry place and preferably indoors to avoid insects or spiders from taking up residence inside the space.

There are literally thousands of different colors and pattern variations available. Online stores are a great way to browse through the different cushions quickly. However, brick and mortar stores can give you friendly personal service face-to-face.

How to wire a 3-way light switch

Filed Under (gardening) by Larry Angell on 29-04-2009

by Larry Angell

There are three basic types of electrical light switches. The first kind is a single light switch. The second kind is a 3 way switch that controls one light or fixture from two locations only. The third type is a 4 way switch that controls one light or fixture from three or more locations.

The quickest wiring method for 3-way switches is to place the light or fixture in the middle of the two switches. Youll need to look at the wiring diagram closely to understand how it is done. The electrical cable should be 12-2 electrical wire up to the first switch, then use 12-3 electrical wire to the light and then to the second switch.

The 12-3 Romex cable has an extra wire called a traveler wire (usually red), which is commonly used for 3 way switches. At the first switch, the 12-2 electrical wire from the circuit run enters through the bottom of the switch box and the hot (black) wire connects to the bottom right terminal on the switch.

The 12-3 electrical cable enters through the top of the switch box. The hot traveler (red) wire connects to top left terminal on the light switch. The black (hot) wire connects to the top right terminal on the light switch.

The 12-3 neutral (white) Romex wire connects directly to the 12-2 neutral Romex wire with wire nuts and the copper ground Romex wires are connected together with wire nuts in the same fashion. At the light fixture box, you should have two ends of 12-3 electrical cable hanging out. One end comes from the first light switch the other comes from the second light switch.

Next, twist the copper ground wires together with a wire nut to get them secured together and out of the way, and then twist the two red traveler wires together with a wire nut also.

Now, find the black wire that comes from the first switch box and the white wire that comes in from the second box and connect them together with wire nuts. Now, heres a really important step. You will need to mark each end of the white wire by wrapping it with black electrical tape. This means the wire is designated as a hot wire. This is a code requirement for using white wires for hot lines! It is a common practice for 3 and 4-way light switches.

Now, at the second switch, you will need to connect the red traveler wire to the top left terminal. The white, wire now marked as black with tape, connects to the upper right terminal. The black wire will connect to the lower right terminal screw. The copper ground wire will connect to the box if it’s a metal box or the green ground screw on the switch if the box is plastic.

The light box should now have a single black wire and a single white wire sticking out which is what you will need to connect the light to.

Bathroom Sets : A Great Way to Start Your Bathroom Decorating Project

Filed Under (gardening) by Jan Elenor Wood on 28-04-2009

by Jan Elenor Wood

You will see a number of great bathroom sets around today. These provide coordinated items so that you don’t have to worry about putting together items from different ranges. If you are decorating your bathroom from scratch they also provide a wonderful starting point for your room scheme and with the help of the guidelines below you will be able to put together your new bathroom decor in no time.

1. Select a Bathroom Set

Your bathroom set needs to tie in with the fixture and fittings, wall tiles and flooring in your bathroom if you have already chosen these. If the bathroom set you select has items such as a shower curtain and towels then it is very easy to put your scheme together. If not, and you need a shower curtain for your bathroom, then look for one which coordinates with your bathroom set as well as your bathroom.

2. Paint Color

If you are starting with a patterned bathroom set, pick out a color from the pattern for your wall color. If you chose a plain or metallic bathroom set, pick a color which goes well with this and the other items in your bathroom. There are so many paint colors available in the various paint ranges that you should be able to get something which matches the color you want although you may have to try a few sample pots to get this just right.

3. Window Treatment

If everything in the bathroom is plain choose a coordinating patterned blind or curtain for your windows. If you have a patterned shower curtain or accessories plain window treatments would be best.

4. Rugs and Towels

Add some richness and depth to your color scheme by choosing bathroom towels and rugs in a slightly deeper shade than the main color your have chosen for your other bathroom items.

5. Add Bathroom Accessories

By choosing a bathroom set you have most of the accessories you need for your bathroom and it’s important not to add too many in a small room if you want to avoid a cluttered look. It’s great however to add a few personal touches of your own - a pile of soft towels in a couple of coordinating colors, a vase or picture on the wall can provide an additional lift to your room scheme.

5 Tips on How to Keep Your Garden Bug Free: Organic Garden Pest Control That Really Works

Filed Under (gardening) by Amelia Lathyrus on 26-04-2009

by Amelia Lathyrus

Various kinds of pests are one of the annoying drawbacks that every kind of garden suffers from. Organic gardens are unfortunately no exception to this rule!

In a conventional garden you fight these pests in a different way than in your organic garden. In an ordinary or non organic garden strong chemicals are regularly used to fight the pests. These chemicals harm every living thing, including plants, good bugs (yes there are plenty!), your soil and you and your family, as well as accumulating and trickling down into the ground water.

Step 1: Organic Garden Pest Control by Hand If you want a really cheap and easy way to get rid of the easy-to-see bugs this is the one. While strolling around your garden in the evening or in the early mornings, look closely on your plants and pick all the harmful bugs you can see and are able to pick. Then either squash them or drown them in a conatiner with soapy water.

Step 2: Organic Garden Pest Control with solutions to spray A simple way to fight bugs is to suffocate them with soapy water. Just mix 1 dl of natural soap with 1 liter of water, then pour into a spray bottle and spray away at your plants. Make sure you cover the whole plant with the mixture, and repeat now and then to get rid of the bugs that subsequently hatch.

Usually kills of both aphids and spider mites, but sometimes the latter ones are a bit difficult.

If you want to try a more efficient and stronger solution to spray on your plants, here is one: Mix well 2-3 garlic cloves, some large chili peppers and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in your blender. Strain, then add the fluid plus 1 tablespoon natural soap to 1 liter of water and make sure you mix the ingredients well together. This should be sprayed on your plants in the morning or in the afternoon/evening, and preferably when cloudy, to avoid damage on the leaves.

The effects of this solution are more widespread than the soapy water, as it may scare away even moles and mice if they smell it near their holes. But the backside of this remedy is this: It will scare away the good bugs as well. But there is a way to avoid this:

Tips 3 for Your Organic Garden Pest Control: Introducing the good bugs This is professionaly called biological pest control. There are several bugs that do the job, the ladybug for one is a really good worker eating aphids with a healthy appetite. Others that are also good at this are the lacewing and the praying mantis. They can be cajoled to move into your garden by growing plants that attract them, or bought in egg sacks or live from a company specialised in this area. Using biological pest control is totally environmentally friendly, as you use the good bugs to establish an ecological balance between them and the ones you that harm your crop.

Step 4: Organic Garden Pest Control by Growing Scary Plants That is, the only ones to get scared are the of course the bugs! Onions planted together with your carrots will deter the carrot root fly from eating away at your carrots. Plant lavender along your garden path and smell the fragrance when you pass by… Marigold are lovely when planted amongst your veggies in your vegetable garden, and can of course be a part of any flower bed, there are so many varieties to choose from.

Make sure your plants grow in healthy soil, rich in nutrients, in order to keep them vigorous and strong. By doing that your plants will be able to flourish even if they are attacked by one pest or another.

Organic Garden Pest Control 5: Killing ants, slugs, fleas, beetles and many other crawling insects Diatomaceous earth works through piercing the exoskeleton of these creatures, causing them to dry out. Lightly coat a thin layer on the ground where ever you have a problem, repeat when necessary, for example after watering or after heavy rain.

Hollyhock horror! That is what I think of the fungus causing the leaves of this lovely oldfashioned flower to turn reddish brown, and then fall off leaving the naked stem with only the flowers at the top. But there is an environmentally friendly way to save them:

Fill a kettle with horsetail, add water to cover and boil for at least 10 minutes. Then filter, dilute 5 to 10 times with water, pour into spray bottle and spray your plants all over, including under the leaves.

I wish you good luck in keeping a heatlhy and beautiful garden!

Outdoor Wicker Patio Furniture: Creating the Patio of Your Dreams

Filed Under (gardening) by John Taylor on 26-04-2009

by Steve Heiden

What kind of furniture you need for your patio varies based on what you are going to do on it. A person that grills and eats outside, for example, needs a larger table than someone that uses it to sit outside and read. You also don’t want to have to start bringing your indoor furniture outside because you ran out of resin outdoor patio furniture.

Outside of very small patios, a good start for any patio is a table that seats 6-8 people and a couple of extra chairs. This isn’t the right resin patio furniture for everyone, but it will be enough for most. People with large families or that entertain large groups will need to figure out how big of a group they would expect on their patio, and should add 2-4 to that.

People who do need room for more people really should consider having multiple tables. A table for twelve is really too large for most situations, and people across the table really can’t comfortably talk to one another. Usually you will want to get two tables that are the same size, but some patios might be better suited for one large table and one small table.

You probably want to spend a bit more money and get a metal table in this case, preferably one that matches. Resin wicker patio furniture is durable, but grills are hot and one accidental collision might mean that particular table ends up warping. A metal table near the grill eliminates that issue.

You may want to spend the extra money for a metal table in this case (especially if you can find one that matches the rest of your furniture). Resin wicker patio furniture is quite durable, but if it accidentally gets slammed into a hot grill, it may end up warping a bit.

You should keep the rest of your outdoor wicker patio furniture away from the grill as much as possible. It has nothing to do about worrying about damage (which is just a precaution for the grill table), it just can get very uncomfortably hot sitting near a grill, and you don’t want any tripping hazards near it either
