The Bush Bean Trio, 'Phaseolus vulgaris', is a three-bean "salad" in a packet. This trio of Blue Lake 274, Cherokee Wax, and Purple Queen bush beans is unsurpassed for flavor, productivity, reliability and hardiness. They have a wonderful fresh flavor and are ideal for canning or freezing. They create a colorful combination for creative cooking. The snap bean or bush bean is eaten pod and all, and is one of those vegetables like tomatoes that tastes significantly better when grown at home rather than bought at the grocery store. Plant in the spring after last average frost date. For all areas, bush beans can be planted in succession to produce beans all season. Sorrel - Common The Sorrel or Common Sorrel, 'Rumex acetosa', is a hardy perennial. Sorrel is an underutilized vegetable in the United States and unjustifiably so. Sorrel is very high in Vitamin C and has many uses. The young tender spring leaves can be used as salad greens, famous for Cream of Sorrel soup, cooked like spinach and served with trout or salmon, or mixed in with cooked spinach or chard. The Sorrel plant is 12 to 36 inches tall and has large, crinkled, arrow-shaped leaves. Sorrel prefers a moderately acid soil and the soil needs to be kept moist for the best flavor and production.
