Holly - Sparkleberry

Sparkleberry Winterberry, Ilex 'Sparkleberry', is a showy, female variety with abundant, brilliant red 3/8" fruit that persist well into winter. It is the spectacular berries that create such a show. Masses of these bright red berries persist into late winter creating quite a display in the winter landscape. This large upright shrub is excellent as a background plant. Unlike typical hollies that have thick evergreen foliage, Sparkleberry's leaves turn yellow in the fall and then fall off. Sparkleberry looks great planted in large groups or in front of evergreens. Shrubs are distinctly upright growing to 10 feet or so and like wet to average soil in sun or light shade. Male and female plants are required in order to produce berries and the perfect male to pollinate. Use Ilex 'Southern Gentleman' as the pollinator. ... details

Sweetshrub The Sweetshrub, Calycanthus floridus, or Carolina allspice is a dense, rounded deciduous shrub with a suckering habit which grows 6-9' tall with an equal or slightly greater spread. Flowers give way to brownish, urn-shaped fruits (seed capsules) which mature in fall and persist throughout the winter. It grows somewhat taller in shade than in sun, and it is tolerant of a wide range of soils, but prefers rich loam. Prune immediately after flowering to shape or maintain compactness. Use as a specimen near front door, patio or other living areas where the fragrant flower aroma may be enjoyed.
