Honeysuckle - Emerald Mound
Emerald Mound Honeysuckle, Lonicera xylosteum 'Emerald Mound', is one of the earliest plants to leaf out in the spring with refreshing light green foliage. The summer blooming flowers are yellow-white and produce dark red berries in fall. It has an attractive mounding form. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, Emerald Mound prefers moist, loamy soils. It can be intolerant of hot and humid summers. Prune to shape after flowering. It typically grows to 3' tall with a slightly larger spread. Honeysuckles are easy to grow, vigorous, and nearly indestructible. Spice Bush Drupes are very attractive, but are largely hidden by the foliage until the leaves drop. Thick, oblong, light green leaves (to 5" long) turn an attractive yellow in autumn. The larva (caterpillar) of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly feeds on the leaves of this shrub. Lindera is named for the Swedish botanist, Johann Lindler. It is used for shrub borders, shade or woodland gardens, moist areas along streams or ponds, native plant gardens or naturalized plantings.
