Lettuce - Romaine Freckles
The Lettuce Romaine Freckles, 'Lactuca sativa', is an Heirloom Romaine with maroon splotches that handles heat well. Make a non-traditional Caesar salad with this gorgeous romaine. This Heirloom is both heat tolerant and very tasty. The Austrians call Freckles "forellenschuss" which translates as "trout, self enclosing", indicating it's a speckled romaine. Lettuce is a cool season annual. Successive plantings can produce lettuce spring through fall. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the average last frost date, and successive plantings thereafter every 3 weeks until 5 weeks before fall frost. The taste is quite sweet, and Brocoverde takes the spring heat better than regular cauliflower, thus making spring plantings more successful in northern climates. Either raw or lightly steamed, you will love the flavor of Brocoverde. The Brocoverde are a green headed, semi-domed cauliflower with 1 pound heads. Plant in the early spring, 1 to 2 weeks before the last frost or late summer, 12 weeks before the first frost for fall harvest. Late summer planting is recommended in hot summer areas or short spring areas. Harvest the heads when buds are tight by cutting the stalk below the head. |
